Medical Device Tube Straightner

The Challenge:

The customer needed to inspect and straighten welded stainless steel tubes to within 0.002" runout. They currently had a large number of human operators with high precision measurement devices measuring each tube and straightening them by hand. The customer wanted an fully automatic machine that would straighten and inspect them.

The Solution:

RND utilized a rotary servo device in conjunction with two LVDT measurement sensors to track the runout at 36 points along the diameters of the tubes. Once the runout was computed the servo rotated the tube back to the high point and a second servo pushed on the tube based on the current runout measurement to straighten it. The tube was measured again and the process repeats until the tube is straightened or is considered a reject. A hopper feeds in the next tube and the process repeats. Two machines were able to take the place of a dozen human operators.
